How do I calculate mulch?
Measure the area in square feet and multiply by the desired depth in feet. Mulch is commonly sold by cubic yard or by bag; check the bag label for its volume.
Example calculation
A 20 × 10 ft area with 3 inches of mulch needs 50 cubic feet, or about 1.85 cubic yards.
Tips for a better estimate
- Measure the actual usable space, not just the outer boundary.
- Double-check units and product packaging before ordering.
- Round purchases up where appropriate to avoid running short.
