FIELD NOTES / GARDEN KNOW-HOW

Little notes for big growth.

Practical pointers for planning and measuring your next outdoor project.

GUIDE 01 · SOIL

How to measure a garden bed before ordering soil

Measure the interior length and width at ground level. For a rectangular bed, multiply length × width × depth, with every measurement converted to feet. A six-inch layer is half a foot. Divide the cubic-foot total by 27 to get cubic yards. For irregular beds, divide the space into rectangles and add their volumes. Check the supplier's delivery minimum and allow for settling.

GUIDE 02 · MULCH

Picking a practical mulch depth

Different mulch materials and planting situations call for different depths. Start by measuring the exposed soil area, subtracting large paved areas and structures. Check product recommendations and avoid piling mulch against tree trunks or plant stems. A little measuring now helps reduce excess bags and return trips.

GUIDE 03 · BUDGET

Build a garden budget that can bend

Split your project into plants, growing media, hardscape materials, equipment, labor and delivery. Use local price quotes where possible and keep a separate contingency for unexpected costs. Estimate quantities before shopping so you can compare prices per bag, cubic yard or square foot instead of only comparing sticker prices.
